Jatindra Nath Das
Jatindra Nath Das (27 October 1904 – 13 September 1929), also known as Jatin Das, was an Indian independence activist and revolutionary. He is best known for his hunger strike in Lahore Central Jail to protest against the inhumane treatment of political prisoners, which ultimately led to his death.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Jatindra Nath Das was born on 27 October 1904 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India. He was a bright student and became involved in the Indian independence movement at a young age. He joined the Anushilan Samiti, a revolutionary group in Bengal, and participated in various activities aimed at ending British rule in India.
Revolutionary Activities[edit | edit source]
Das was deeply influenced by the ideals of Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries. He was involved in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and participated in several revolutionary activities. In 1925, he was arrested for his involvement in the Kakori conspiracy case but was later released due to lack of evidence.
Hunger Strike[edit | edit source]
In June 1929, Das was arrested in connection with the Lahore Conspiracy Case and was imprisoned in Lahore Central Jail. Along with other political prisoners, he demanded better treatment and facilities. When their demands were not met, Das began a hunger strike on 13 July 1929. His health deteriorated rapidly, and despite several appeals for his release, the British authorities refused to relent. After 63 days of fasting, Jatindra Nath Das died on 13 September 1929.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Jatindra Nath Das's sacrifice became a symbol of the struggle for Indian independence. His death sparked widespread protests and demonstrations across India. He is remembered as a martyr who gave his life for the cause of freedom. Several institutions and places have been named in his honor, including the Jatin Das Park in Kolkata.
