Jay Black (born David Blatt; November 2, 1938 – October 22, 2021) was an American singer, also known as "The Voice," who was the lead vocalist of the band Jay and the Americans. He was known for his powerful and distinctive voice.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Jay Black was born David Blatt in Brooklyn, New York City. He grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family and attended Yeshiva.

Jay and the Americans[edit | edit source]

Jay Black joined Jay and the Americans in 1962, replacing the original lead singer, Jay Traynor. The band achieved significant success during the 1960s with hits like "Cara Mia", "Come a Little Bit Closer", and "This Magic Moment". Black's powerful voice became a defining feature of the band's sound.

Solo Career[edit | edit source]

After the band disbanded in 1973, Jay Black pursued a solo career. He continued to perform under the name "Jay Black and the Americans," despite legal disputes over the use of the band's name.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Jay Black was married three times and had four children. He struggled with gambling addiction, which led to financial difficulties later in life.

Death[edit | edit source]

Jay Black passed away on October 22, 2021, at the age of 82. He died from complications of pneumonia.
