Jean-Jacques Chifflet
Jean-Jacques Chifflet (1588–1660) was a Franco-Belgian physician, antiquary, and historian. He is best known for his work in the field of numismatics and his contributions to the study of ancient history and archaeology.

Jean-Jacques Chifflet was born in Besançon, a city in the Free County of Burgundy, which is now part of France. He studied medicine at the University of Dole and later at the University of Montpellier, where he earned his degree in medicine.
Career[edit | edit source]
Chifflet began his career as a physician in Besançon, where he quickly gained a reputation for his medical expertise. He was appointed as the personal physician to the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. This position allowed him to travel extensively and conduct research in various fields.
Contributions to Numismatics[edit | edit source]
Chifflet made significant contributions to the field of numismatics, the study of coins and medals. His work, Anastasis Childerici I, published in 1655, detailed the discovery and analysis of the tomb of Childeric I, a Frankish king. This publication included detailed descriptions and illustrations of the coins and artifacts found in the tomb, which provided valuable insights into the history and culture of the Franks.
Antiquary and Historian[edit | edit source]
In addition to his work in numismatics, Chifflet was also an accomplished antiquary and historian. He wrote several works on the history of the Burgundy region and the Franks. His research was characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a rigorous approach to historical documentation.
