Jeff Chandler (December 15, 1918 – June 17, 1961) was an American actor, film producer, and singer best known for his roles in Western and adventure films. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Cochise in the film Broken Arrow.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Jeff Chandler was born Ira Grossel in Brooklyn, New York City. He attended Erasmus Hall High School and later studied at the Feagin School of Dramatic Art. After completing his education, Chandler worked in radio and theater before transitioning to film.

Career[edit | edit source]

Chandler's film career began in the late 1940s. He signed a contract with Universal Pictures and quickly became known for his rugged good looks and deep voice. His breakthrough role came in 1950 when he portrayed the Apache chief Cochise in Broken Arrow. This role earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor nomination and established him as a leading man in Hollywood.

Throughout the 1950s, Chandler starred in a variety of films, including Sword in the Desert (1949), Female on the Beach (1955), and Away All Boats (1956). He was particularly noted for his performances in Westerns and adventure films. In addition to acting, Chandler also produced several films and recorded music, showcasing his singing talent.

Chandler was married to actress Marjorie Hoshelle from 1946 to 1954, and they had two daughters. His personal life was often the subject of media attention, particularly his relationships with other actresses, including Esther Williams.
