Jerzy Vetulani
Jerzy Vetulani (21 January 1936 – 6 April 2017) was a Polish neuroscientist, pharmacologist, biochemist, and professor. He was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Learning. Vetulani was known for his research on the mechanisms of antidepressant drugs and the role of neuroplasticity in depression.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Jerzy Vetulani was born in Kraków, Poland. He studied at the Jagiellonian University, where he earned his degree in biology in 1957. He later completed his Ph.D. in pharmacology in 1966.
Career[edit | edit source]
Vetulani began his career at the Institute of Pharmacology, Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, where he worked for most of his professional life. He became a professor in 1983 and was later appointed as the deputy director of the institute.
Research[edit | edit source]
Vetulani's research focused on the mechanisms of action of antidepressant drugs, particularly the role of neuroplasticity in depression. He was one of the first scientists to propose that antidepressants work by enhancing neuroplasticity, which helps to restore normal brain function in patients with depression.
Publications[edit | edit source]
Throughout his career, Vetulani published over 200 scientific papers and several books. His work has been widely cited in the fields of neuroscience and pharmacology.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Vetulani received numerous awards for his contributions to science, including the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Golden Cross of Merit.

Jerzy Vetulani was married and had two children. He was known for his passion for science and his dedication to mentoring young researchers.

Jerzy Vetulani passed away on 6 April 2017 in Kraków, Poland.
