Jim McDermott (born December 28, 1936) is an American politician who served as a United States Representative from Washington's 7th congressional district from 1989 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, McDermott was a prominent figure in health care reform and a strong advocate for progressive causes.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Jim McDermott was born in Chicago, Illinois, and later moved to Seattle, Washington. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wheaton College in Illinois and went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. After completing his medical education, McDermott served as a psychiatrist in the United States Navy, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant commander.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

McDermott's political career began in the Washington State Senate, where he served from 1971 to 1987. During his tenure in the state senate, he focused on health care and environmental issues, earning a reputation as a progressive voice in state politics.

In 1988, McDermott was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he would serve for nearly three decades. Throughout his time in Congress, McDermott was known for his advocacy on health care issues, including his support for a single-payer health care system. He played a significant role in the passage of the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare, and was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Subcommittee on Health.

McDermott was also a vocal critic of the Iraq War and was involved in various efforts to promote peace and human rights globally. His legislative efforts included work on mental health parity, HIV/AIDS funding and policy, and environmental protection.
