Jimmie C. Holland (April 9, 1928 – December 24, 2017) was an American psychiatrist and a pioneer in the field of psycho-oncology. She was instrumental in establishing the importance of addressing the psychological and emotional aspects of cancer care, advocating for the integration of mental health services in oncology.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Jimmie C. Holland was born in Nevada, Texas, and grew up in a small farming community. She attended Baylor University where she earned her undergraduate degree. She then pursued her medical degree at the Baylor College of Medicine, graduating in 1952. Holland completed her residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and furthered her training at McLean Hospital.

Career[edit | edit source]

Holland began her career in psychiatry at a time when the field was predominantly focused on severe mental illnesses. Her interest in the psychological aspects of physical illness led her to work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City, where she founded the first full-time psychiatric service in a cancer hospital in 1977. This was a groundbreaking development, as it highlighted the need for psychological care in cancer treatment.

Psycho-oncology[edit | edit source]

Holland is best known for her work in psycho-oncology, a field she helped to establish. Psycho-oncology focuses on the psychological, social, and behavioral dimensions of cancer. Holland's work emphasized the importance of understanding the emotional responses of patients to cancer diagnosis and treatment, and she advocated for comprehensive care that includes mental health support.

She was the founding president of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society and played a key role in the development of the International Psycho-Oncology Society. Her efforts helped to legitimize the field and integrate it into standard cancer care practices.

Contributions and legacy[edit | edit source]

Holland authored numerous articles and books on the subject of psycho-oncology, including "The Human Side of Cancer," which became a seminal text in the field. Her work has influenced countless healthcare professionals and has led to the widespread recognition of the importance of addressing the psychological needs of cancer patients.

Holland received numerous awards for her contributions to medicine and psychiatry, including the American Cancer Society's Medal of Honor for Clinical Research. Her legacy continues through the ongoing work of the Jimmie C. Holland Chair in Psychiatric Oncology at MSKCC, which supports research and education in the field she pioneered.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Jimmie C. Holland was married to James F. Holland, a prominent oncologist, and they had six children. She balanced her professional career with her family life, often speaking about the importance of support systems in managing both personal and professional responsibilities.
