Jimmy Buffett

James William Buffett (December 25, 1946 – September 1, 2023) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, author, and businessman. He was best known for his music, which often portrays an "island escapism" lifestyle. Together with his Coral Reefer Band, Buffett recorded hit songs including "Margaritaville" (ranked 234th on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of "Songs of the Century") and "Come Monday". He has a devoted base of fans known as "Parrotheads".

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Buffett was born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and spent part of his childhood in Mobile, Alabama. He began playing guitar during his college years at Auburn University and later at Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi, where he received a bachelor's degree in history in 1969.

Music Career[edit | edit source]

Buffett began his musical career in the late 1960s as a country artist in Nashville, Tennessee. He released his first album, Down to Earth, in 1970. His breakthrough came with the 1977 album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, which featured the hit single "Margaritaville".

Buffett's music is characterized by a unique blend of country, rock, and pop with tropical and island themes. His lyrics often reflect a laid-back, carefree lifestyle, which has resonated with fans worldwide.

In addition to his music career, Buffett was a successful businessman. He was involved in various ventures, including the Margaritaville restaurant and hotel chain, which capitalized on the popularity of his music and lifestyle brand. He also co-developed the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain.

Buffett was also a best-selling author. He wrote three number-one bestsellers: Tales from Margaritaville, Where Is Joe Merchant?, and A Pirate Looks at Fifty. His books often reflect the same themes of escapism and adventure found in his music.

Buffett was married twice and had three children. He was known for his philanthropy, particularly in the areas of environmental conservation and education. He was also an avid sailor and pilot.
