John D. White
John D. White was an American politician and lawyer who served as a U.S. Representative from Kentucky. He was born on January 16, 1849, in Clay County, Kentucky, and died on January 5, 1920. White was a member of the Republican Party.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
John D. White was born into a prominent political family. He was the nephew of John White, who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. White attended the common schools and later graduated from Eminence College in Eminence, Kentucky. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1872, commencing practice in Irvine, Kentucky.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
White's political career began when he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1877, to March 3, 1881. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1880.
In 1884, White was again elected to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving from March 4, 1885, to March 3, 1887. During his tenure, he was known for his advocacy of civil rights and his efforts to improve the infrastructure in his district.
Later Life and Career[edit | edit source]
After his congressional service, White resumed the practice of law. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was involved in various business ventures. White remained active in politics and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1888.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
John D. White died on January 5, 1920, in Manchester, Kentucky. He was interred in the family cemetery in Clay County, Kentucky. White's contributions to Kentucky politics and his efforts in Congress are remembered as part of the state's rich political history.
