Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Kitzhaber was born in Colfax, Washington. He attended Dartmouth College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. He then went on to attend the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health & Science University), where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1973.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his medical degree, Kitzhaber worked as an emergency room physician in Roseburg, Oregon. His experience in the medical field influenced his later political career, particularly his focus on healthcare reform.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Kitzhaber was first elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1978. He served in the Oregon State Senate from 1980 to 1993, where he became the President of the Oregon Senate. Governorship[edit | edit source]
Kitzhaber was elected as the 35th Governor of Oregon in 1994 and was re-elected in 1998. During his tenure, he focused on healthcare, education, and environmental issues. After leaving office in 2003, he returned to the governorship in 2011, becoming the first person to serve non-consecutive terms as Governor of Oregon.
Resignation[edit | edit source]
In 2015, Kitzhaber resigned amid a public corruption investigation involving his fiancée, Cylvia Hayes. The investigation centered around allegations of influence peddling and misuse of public office.

Kitzhaber has been married three times and has one son. He is known for his passion for fly fishing and outdoor activities.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Kitzhaber's legacy is largely defined by his work on healthcare reform and his efforts to expand access to medical services in Oregon. The Oregon Health Plan remains a significant part of his political legacy.
