John Albert Kitzhaber (born March 5, 1947) is an American politician and physician who served as the 35th and 37th Governor of Oregon. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Kitzhaber was born in Colfax, Washington. He attended Dartmouth College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. He later received his medical degree from the Oregon Health & Science University in 1973.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical degree, Kitzhaber worked as an emergency room physician in Roseburg, Oregon. His experience in the medical field significantly influenced his later political career, particularly his focus on healthcare reform.

Oregon House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

Kitzhaber began his political career in the Oregon House of Representatives, serving from 1979 to 1981.

Oregon State Senate[edit | edit source]

He was elected to the Oregon State Senate in 1981, where he served until 1993. During his tenure, he became the President of the Senate from 1985 to 1993.

Governor of Oregon[edit | edit source]

Kitzhaber was first elected as the Governor of Oregon in 1994 and served two terms from 1995 to 2003. After a hiatus, he was re-elected in 2010 and served from 2011 until his resignation in 2015.

During his first two terms, Kitzhaber focused on healthcare reform, education, and environmental issues. He was instrumental in the creation of the Oregon Health Plan, which aimed to provide healthcare to uninsured residents.

Second Term (2011-2015)[edit | edit source]

Kitzhaber returned to office in 2011, continuing his work on healthcare and education. However, his tenure was marred by controversy, leading to his resignation in 2015.
