John Macias
John Macias (1585 – September 16, 1645) was a Spanish Dominican lay brother who served in Lima, Peru. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
John Macias was born in Ribera del Fresno, Spain, in 1585. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his uncle. He worked as a shepherd during his youth, which allowed him ample time for prayer and contemplation.
Religious Life[edit | edit source]
In 1622, John Macias joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother. He was assigned to the Convent of St. Mary Magdalene in Lima, Peru. Despite his humble position, he became known for his deep spirituality, humility, and dedication to the poor and sick.
Miracles and Legacy[edit | edit source]
John Macias is credited with numerous miracles both during his life and after his death. He was known for his ability to bilocate, his prophetic insights, and his healing powers. His reputation for sanctity spread quickly, and many people sought his intercession.
Canonization[edit | edit source]
John Macias was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI on October 22, 1837, and later canonized by Pope Paul VI on September 28, 1975. His feast day is celebrated on September 18.
Veneration[edit | edit source]
John Macias is venerated as the patron saint of Peru and is especially invoked for the protection of the poor and the sick. His remains are enshrined in the Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo in Lima.
