John Milton Bernhisel

John Milton Bernhisel (June 23, 1799 – September 28, 1881) was an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and a prominent physician and politician in the United States. He is best known for his role as a delegate to the United States Congress representing the Utah Territory.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

John Milton Bernhisel was born on June 23, 1799, in Tyrone Township, Pennsylvania. He pursued an education in medicine and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1827. After completing his medical degree, Bernhisel practiced medicine in New York City.

Conversion to Mormonism[edit | edit source]

In the early 1840s, Bernhisel became acquainted with the teachings of Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church. He converted to Mormonism and became an active member of the church. Bernhisel's medical expertise and dedication to the church quickly earned him a place of prominence within the LDS community.

Role in the LDS Church[edit | edit source]

Bernhisel played a significant role in the early history of the LDS Church. He was a close associate of Brigham Young and served as a personal physician to both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. Bernhisel was also involved in the church's efforts to establish a new settlement in the Salt Lake Valley.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

In 1850, Bernhisel was elected as the first delegate to the United States Congress from the newly established Utah Territory. He served in this capacity from 1851 to 1859 and again from 1861 to 1863. As a delegate, Bernhisel worked tirelessly to represent the interests of the Utah Territory and the LDS Church. He was instrumental in advocating for the admission of Utah as a state and worked to secure federal support for the territory's development.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After his political career, Bernhisel continued to be an active member of the LDS Church and contributed to the community in various ways. He passed away on September 28, 1881, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Bernhisel is remembered for his contributions to both the medical field and the early political landscape of the Utah Territory.
