John Rutsey was a Canadian musician, best known as the original drummer and a founding member of the legendary rock band Rush. Born on July 23, 1952, in Toronto, Ontario, Rutsey played a crucial role in the formation of Rush alongside guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee.

Rutsey's drumming style was characterized by its powerful and precise execution, contributing to the distinctive sound of Rush's early music. He performed on the band's self-titled debut album, "Rush (album)", released in 1974. Rutsey's drumming on tracks such as "Finding My Way" and "Working Man" showcased his dynamic playing and solid rhythmic foundation.

Despite his significant contributions to Rush's initial success, Rutsey left the band in 1974 due to health concerns related to diabetes. He was replaced by drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, who went on to become an integral part of Rush's enduring legacy.

Following his departure from Rush, Rutsey largely retreated from the music industry and maintained a low profile. He passed away on May 11, 2008, at the age of 55.

In recognition of his role in the early history of Rush, John Rutsey remains a respected figure among fans of the band and is remembered for his contributions to their formative years.
