He started his career in the company's poultry division, working in various roles and gaining valuable experience in the operations and management of the business. Over the years, he held several key positions within the company, including Vice President of Poultry Operations and Senior Vice President of Poultry and Prepared Foods.

In 1991, John W. Tyson was appointed as the President and CEO of Tyson Foods, taking over the leadership from his father, Don Tyson. Under his guidance, the company continued to expand its operations and diversify its product offerings. He played a crucial role in the acquisition of several major food companies, including IBP, Inc., which significantly increased Tyson Foods' presence in the beef and pork markets.

During his tenure as CEO, John W. Tyson focused on improving the company's efficiency and implementing sustainable practices. He emphasized the importance of animal welfare and environmental stewardship, leading Tyson Foods to become a leader in these areas within the food industry.
