- Jonesboro was originally named Leaksville, after a local settler. The city was later renamed Jonesboro, after Samuel Goode Jones, a railroad official. The city played a significant role in the American Civil War, serving as the location of the Battle of Jonesboro.

- Jonesboro is located in the northern part of Clayton County, bordered by the city of Morrow to the west and the city of Riverdale to the north. The city covers a total area of 2.6 square miles, of which 2.6 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles is water.
