Jopen is a traditional Dutch beer originating from the city of Haarlem. The name "Jopen" refers to the 112-liter beer barrels that were used in the 15th century. This beer style was almost lost to history but was revived in the late 20th century, leading to the establishment of the Jopenkerk, a brewery and bar located in a former church in Haarlem.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Jopen beer dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries when Haarlem was one of the most important brewing cities in the Netherlands. The city's brewers were renowned for their high-quality beers, which were exported throughout Europe. The recipes for these beers were carefully guarded, and the standard barrel size for export, the Jopen, became synonymous with Haarlem's brewing excellence.

However, with the advent of industrialization and the decline of Haarlem's brewing industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, the traditional recipes and the Jopen name were nearly forgotten. In the 1990s, a group of enthusiasts initiated a project to revive Haarlem's brewing heritage. They researched historical recipes in the city archives and started brewing beer according to these centuries-old methods. This led to the establishment of the Jopen brewery in 1994, which has since become a symbol of Haarlem's brewing revival.

Jopen Brewery[edit | edit source]

The Jopen brewery (Jopenkerk) is housed in a former church in Haarlem, which has been converted into a brewery, restaurant, and bar. The brewery produces a wide range of beers, many of which are based on historical recipes from the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. The Jopenkerk has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a unique combination of historical ambiance and modern craft beer culture.

Beers[edit | edit source]

Jopen produces a variety of beers, including traditional styles such as the Jopen Koyt, a gruit beer made with herbs instead of hops, and modern craft beers like IPAs and stouts. The brewery is known for its commitment to historical accuracy in its recipes, as well as its innovation in creating new beer styles.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The revival of Jopen beer has played a significant role in the resurgence of craft brewing in the Netherlands. It has also contributed to the cultural heritage of Haarlem, highlighting the city's historical importance in the brewing industry. The Jopenkerk, as a brewery and gathering place, has become a symbol of the city's revitalized brewing tradition and a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional beer styles.
