José Serra (born 19 March 1942) is a Brazilian economist and politician. He has held several significant political offices in Brazil, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Health, Governor of São Paulo, and Mayor of São Paulo. He is a member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

José Serra was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on 19 March 1942. He studied engineering at the University of São Paulo but later switched to economics. He completed his education in economics at the University of Chile and later pursued further studies at Cornell University in the United States.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Early Career[edit | edit source]

Serra began his political career in the 1960s as a student leader. He was elected president of the National Union of Students (UNE) in 1963. During the military dictatorship in Brazil, he went into exile, living in Chile and later in the United States.

Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

Serra served as the Minister of Health from 1998 to 2002 under President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. During his tenure, he implemented significant public health policies, including the creation of generic drugs and the expansion of the public health system.

Mayor of São Paulo[edit | edit source]

In 2004, Serra was elected Mayor of São Paulo. He served from 1 January 2005 until 31 March 2006, when he resigned to run for the governorship of São Paulo.

Governor of São Paulo[edit | edit source]

Serra was elected Governor of São Paulo in 2006 and took office on 1 January 2007. He served until 2 April 2010, when he resigned to run for the presidency of Brazil.

Minister of Foreign Affairs[edit | edit source]

In 2016, Serra was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Michel Temer. He served in this position until 22 February 2017, when he resigned due to health issues.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

José Serra is married to Mônica Allende Serra, and they have two children. He is known for his contributions to public health and his efforts to improve the quality of life in São Paulo.
