Josiah K. Lilly, Jr

Josiah Kirby Lilly Jr. (November 25, 1893 – May 5, 1966) was an American industrialist, philanthropist, and collector. He was the son of Josiah K. Lilly Sr. and the grandson of Eli Lilly, the founder of the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Josiah K. Lilly Jr. was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Culver Military Academy and later graduated from Indiana University with a degree in pharmacy. He joined the family business, Eli Lilly and Company, in 1914.

Lilly Jr. held various positions within Eli Lilly and Company, eventually becoming the president in 1948. Under his leadership, the company expanded its research and development efforts, leading to significant advancements in pharmaceuticals.

Lilly Jr. was a notable philanthropist, contributing to numerous causes and institutions. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Lilly Endowment, one of the largest private foundations in the United States. The endowment supports community development, education, and religion.
