Juan Manuel Taveras (1919–2002) was a pioneering Dominican neuroradiologist and a key figure in the development of modern neuroradiology. He is best known for his contributions to the field of radiology and for establishing the first neuroradiology training program in the United States.

Juan Manuel Taveras was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, in 1919. He pursued his medical education at the University of Santo Domingo, where he earned his medical degree. Following his graduation, Taveras moved to the United States to further his training in radiology.

Taveras completed his residency in radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, where he later became a faculty member. In 1954, he founded the first neuroradiology training program in the United States at MGH. His work significantly advanced the field, particularly in the areas of angiography and computed tomography (CT).

Taveras was instrumental in the development of angiography techniques, which are used to visualize the blood vessels in the brain. He also played a crucial role in the early adoption and refinement of computed tomography (CT) scanning, which revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions.

Throughout his career, Taveras held numerous academic and professional leadership positions. He served as the President of the American Society of Neuroradiology and was a founding member of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies.
