Julius Nicolaysen (1831–1909) was a prominent Norwegian surgeon and professor of medicine. He is best known for his contributions to the field of surgery and his role in advancing medical education in Norway.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Julius Nicolaysen was born on 5 August 1831 in Christiania, now known as Oslo, Norway. He pursued his medical studies at the Royal Frederick University (now the University of Oslo), where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1857.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Nicolaysen worked at several hospitals in Norway, gaining extensive experience in various surgical procedures. In 1864, he was appointed as a chief surgeon at the Rikshospitalet (The National Hospital) in Oslo, a position he held for many years. His tenure at Rikshospitalet was marked by significant advancements in surgical techniques and patient care.

Nicolaysen made several notable contributions to the field of surgery. He was particularly known for his work on abdominal surgery and was one of the first surgeons in Norway to perform successful operations on the stomach and intestines.
