KCNAB1
KCNAB1 is a gene that encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, shaker-related subfamily. This member is one of the beta subunits, which are auxiliary proteins associating with functional Kv-alpha subunits. This gene is prominently expressed in the brain and may have a crucial role in controlling neuronal excitability.
Function[edit | edit source]
The protein encoded by the KCNAB1 gene is a voltage-gated potassium channel subunit. Potassium channels, formed by alpha-subunits and auxiliary beta-subunits, play a crucial role in the neuronal excitability. The alpha-subunit has the characteristic voltage-gated ion channel structure and can form a functional channel alone. The beta-subunits modulate the kinetics and voltage dependence of channel activation.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Alterations in the KCNAB1 gene have been associated with neurological disorders such as epilepsy and migraine. Further research is needed to fully understand the role of this gene in these conditions.
