KHON-TV is a television station in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States, affiliated with the Fox network. It is owned by Nexstar Media Group. KHON-TV's studios are located on Piikoi Street in Honolulu, and its transmitter is located atop the Koolau Range.

History[edit | edit source]

KHON-TV first signed on the air on December 15, 1952, as Hawaii's second television station. Originally, it was an affiliate of the NBC network. The station was founded by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspaper and was initially a primary NBC affiliate, sharing secondary affiliations with CBS and ABC until those networks established their own affiliates in the market.

In 1996, KHON-TV switched its affiliation from NBC to Fox as part of a major network realignment. This change was part of a larger deal involving several stations owned by SF Broadcasting, which was later acquired by Nexstar Media Group.

Programming[edit | edit source]

KHON-TV broadcasts a variety of programming, including local news, sports, and entertainment. The station produces several hours of local news each day, branded as "KHON2 News." It also airs syndicated programming and Fox network shows, including popular series such as "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy."

News Operation[edit | edit source]

KHON-TV has a long history of news broadcasting in Hawaii. The station's news department produces local newscasts that cover a wide range of topics, including local politics, community events, and weather. KHON2 News is known for its comprehensive coverage of local issues and its commitment to investigative journalism.

Technical Information[edit | edit source]

KHON-TV broadcasts on digital channel 8 (VHF) and uses virtual channel 2. The station's digital signal is multiplexed, providing additional programming streams.

Ownership[edit | edit source]

KHON-TV is owned by Nexstar Media Group, one of the largest television station operators in the United States. Nexstar acquired KHON-TV as part of its acquisition of Media General in 2017.
