Early Life[edit | edit source]

Mácha was born on 16 November 1810 in Prague, then part of the Austrian Empire. He studied law at Charles University in Prague, but his true passion was literature. During his studies, he became involved in the burgeoning Czech nationalist movement.

Mácha's most famous work is the poem Máj (May), which was published in 1836. The poem tells the story of two lovers, Vilém and Jarmila, set against the backdrop of the May Day celebrations in Prague. Máj is characterized by its rich language, vivid imagery, and exploration of themes such as love, nature, and the supernatural.
