Karius and Bactus

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Karius and Bactus are the main characters in a Norwegian children's book written by Thorbjørn Egner in 1949. The story revolves around two mischievous characters, Karius (representing caries) and Bactus (representing bacteria), who live in the mouth of a boy named Jens. Their adventures are centered around their love for creating holes in Jens' teeth by feasting on the food particles left in his mouth, especially those from sweets and sugary substances.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The narrative follows Karius and Bactus as they enjoy their life inside Jens' mouth, taking advantage of his poor dental hygiene habits. They drill holes into his teeth, building rooms and passages, and having a grand time. However, their joy comes to an abrupt end when Jens decides to improve his dental hygiene under the guidance of a dentist. He starts brushing his teeth regularly, which destroys the home of Karius and Bactus and ultimately washes them away, serving as a cautionary tale about the importance of good dental care.
