Karl von Pfeufer (1806–1869) was a prominent German internist and medical professor known for his contributions to the field of internal medicine and his role in advancing medical education in the 19th century.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Karl von Pfeufer was born on December 22, 1806, in Bamberg, Kingdom of Bavaria. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Würzburg and the University of Munich, where he was influenced by leading medical figures of the time. Pfeufer completed his medical degree in 1828.

Career[edit | edit source]

After obtaining his degree, Pfeufer began his career as an assistant at the University of Munich's medical clinic. He quickly gained recognition for his clinical skills and was appointed as a professor of medicine at the University of Basel in 1835. During his tenure at Basel, Pfeufer focused on the integration of clinical practice with medical education, emphasizing the importance of bedside teaching.

In 1840, Pfeufer returned to Munich, where he was appointed as a professor of medicine and director of the medical clinic at the University of Munich. He played a crucial role in reforming the medical curriculum, advocating for a more scientific approach to medical education.

Pfeufer was a pioneer in the field of internal medicine, particularly in the study of cardiovascular diseases.
