Keele

Keele is a village and civil parish in northern Staffordshire, England. It is approximately three miles (5 km) west of Newcastle-under-Lyme, and is close to the village of Silverdale. Keele is notable for being the location of Keele University and the Keele Services, a motorway service area on the M6.

Keele was recorded in the Domesday Book as belonging to the King. In the Middle Ages, it was the centre of a large parish which included many surrounding villages. This changed in the 19th century when those villages became separate civil parishes.

Keele University[edit | edit source]

Keele University is a public research university located in Keele. It was established in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire, and received university status in 1962. The university is known for its campus, which is among the largest in the UK, and for its courses in health, humanities, natural and social sciences.

Keele Services[edit | edit source]

Keele Services is a motorway service area on the M6, located between junctions 15 and 16. It is operated by Welcome Break and offers a range of facilities including food outlets, a petrol station and a hotel.
