University

A university is an institution of higher education and research which awards academic degrees in various academic disciplines. Universities typically provide undergraduate education and postgraduate education.

History[edit | edit source]

The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars". The term was coined by the Italian University of Bologna, which, with a traditional founding date of 1088, is considered the first university.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Universities are generally composed of several colleges. In the United States, universities are usually institutions of higher education offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. In the United Kingdom, the term "university" is more commonly used to denote an institution that offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Functions[edit | edit source]

Universities are generally regarded as a place where the culture and learning of a society are preserved and advanced. They are also often involved in the research and development of new ideas and technologies.
