Keg Mansion
Keg Mansion is a historic building located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Originally built in 1867, it has served various purposes over the years, including as a private residence and a restaurant. The mansion is known for its distinctive architecture and rich history, making it a notable landmark in the city.
History[edit | edit source]
The Keg Mansion was originally constructed for Arthur McMaster, a prominent figure in Toronto's early history. In 1882, it was purchased by Hart Massey, a well-known industrialist and philanthropist. The Massey family made significant contributions to the cultural and social landscape of Toronto, and their residence became a hub for the city's elite.
After the Massey family, the mansion went through several ownership changes. In 1961, it was converted into a restaurant, and in 1976, it became part of the Keg Steakhouse & Bar chain, known simply as the Keg Mansion.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The Keg Mansion is an excellent example of Gothic Revival architecture, characterized by its pointed arches, intricate woodwork, and grandiose design. The building features a large central hall, multiple dining rooms, and a sweeping staircase, all of which have been preserved to maintain the historical integrity of the structure.
Hauntings and Legends[edit | edit source]
The Keg Mansion is reputed to be one of the most haunted buildings in Toronto. Numerous stories and legends surround the mansion, including sightings of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena. One of the most famous tales involves the spirit of a maid who allegedly hanged herself in the house after the death of Lillian Massey, Hart Massey's daughter.
Current Use[edit | edit source]
Today, the Keg Mansion operates as a popular restaurant, offering a unique dining experience that combines fine dining with a touch of history. The restaurant is known for its steak and seafood dishes, as well as its atmospheric setting, which retains much of the mansion's original charm.
