(Redirected from Ketogestin)

11-Ketoprogesterone (also known as 11-KP) is a steroid hormone that is produced in the adrenal glands. It is a metabolite of progesterone, a hormone that plays a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryogenesis.

Structure and Synthesis[edit | edit source]

11-Ketoprogesterone is a C21 steroid with a keto group at the 11-position. It is synthesized from progesterone via the action of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD). This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of the 11-hydroxy group of progesterone to a keto group, resulting in the formation of 11-KP.

Function[edit | edit source]

The physiological role of 11-Ketoprogesterone is not fully understood. However, it is known to have some glucocorticoid activity, meaning it can influence glucose metabolism and immune function. It is also thought to have some mineralocorticoid activity, which means it can affect water and electrolyte balance in the body.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormal levels of 11-Ketoprogesterone can be indicative of certain medical conditions. Elevated levels may be seen in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a group of inherited disorders affecting the adrenal glands. Conversely, reduced levels of 11-KP may be associated with Addison's disease, a condition characterized by insufficient production of steroid hormones by the adrenal glands.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research into the role and function of 11-Ketoprogesterone is ongoing. Understanding more about this hormone could potentially lead to new treatments for conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and certain types of cancer.
