Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Kevin Newman was born on 10 October 1933 in Sydney, Australia. He attended local schools in Sydney before enrolling at the University of Sydney, where he studied economics and political science. After completing his education, Newman served in the Australian Army, where he attained the rank of Major.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Kevin Newman entered politics as a member of the Liberal Party of Australia. He was elected to the Australian House of Representatives for the seat of Bass in a by-election in 1975, following the resignation of Lance Barnard.

Ministerial Roles[edit | edit source]

During his time in parliament, Newman held several ministerial positions. He was appointed Minister for Repatriation in 1975, a position he held until 1976. Following this, he served as Minister for Environment, Housing and Community Development from 1976 to 1977. In 1979, he became the Minister for Administrative Services, a role he held until 1980.

Contributions and Achievements[edit | edit source]

As Minister for Environment, Housing and Community Development, Newman was instrumental in the development of policies aimed at improving urban planning and housing affordability. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Australian Heritage Commission.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After retiring from politics in 1984, Kevin Newman continued to contribute to public life through various roles in community organizations and advisory boards. He was recognized for his service to the community and was awarded the Order of Australia in 1991.

Kevin Newman was married to Jocelyn Newman, who was also a prominent politician and served as a Senator for Tasmania. They had two children, including Campbell Newman, who later became the Premier of Queensland.
