Kharia language

It belongs to the Austroasiatic language family, which also includes other languages such as Munda and Khasi. Kharia is further classified under the Kharia–Juang branch of the Munda languages, making it a significant member of the Austroasiatic languages in India.

Classification

Kharia is an Austroasiatic language, which is a family of languages primarily spoken in Southeast Asia and the Eastern Indian subcontinent. Within this family, Kharia is part of the Munda languages, which are found in the central and eastern parts of India. The language has three dialects: Black Kharia, Hill Kharia, and Dilki Kharia, with Black Kharia being the most widely spoken.

Geographical Distribution

The majority of Kharia speakers are found in India, with significant populations in Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. Small communities of speakers can also be found in neighboring states. This is due to the decreasing number of speakers, especially among the younger generation, who are increasingly adopting the dominant regional languages such as Hindi and Odia.
