Kiri Allan is a New Zealand politician and member of the New Zealand Labour Party. She has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the East Coast electorate since the 2017 New Zealand general election. Allan has held various ministerial portfolios and is known for her work in areas such as conservation, emergency management, and justice.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Kiri Allan was born in Te Karaka, a small town in the Gisborne District of New Zealand. She is of Māori descent, with affiliations to the Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi, and Ngāti Tūwharetoa iwi. Allan attended Victoria University of Wellington, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

Allan entered politics as a member of the New Zealand Labour Party. She was elected as the MP for the East Coast electorate in the 2017 general election, defeating the incumbent MP from the New Zealand National Party.

Ministerial Roles[edit | edit source]

In November 2020, Allan was appointed as the Minister of Conservation, Minister for Emergency Management, and Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage. In her role as Minister of Conservation, she has been involved in various initiatives to protect New Zealand's natural environment and biodiversity. As Minister for Emergency Management, Allan has overseen the government's response to natural disasters and emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kiri Allan is openly lesbian and has been an advocate for LGBT rights. She has spoken publicly about her experiences and the importance of representation in politics.

Health[edit | edit source]

In April 2021, Allan announced that she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer. She took a leave of absence from her ministerial duties to undergo treatment and returned to her roles later in the year.
