Kirin Company traces its origins back to 1885 when it was founded as the Japan Brewery Company, Ltd. The company was established by William Copeland, a Norwegian-American brewer who had previously founded the Spring Valley Brewery in Yokohama. In 1907, the company was renamed Kirin Brewery Company, Limited.

Kirin is well-known for its flagship beer, Kirin Ichiban, which is a lager beer brewed using a unique "first press" method. This method involves using only the first press of the wort, resulting in a beer with a rich flavor and smooth finish.
In addition to beer, Kirin produces a wide range of beverages, including soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages. The company also has a significant presence in the pharmaceutical industry through its subsidiary, Kirin Pharma Company, Limited.
