Klawock
Klawock is a city in Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, Alaska, United States. The population was 755 at the 2010 census, down from 854 in 2000. It is the first sizable town (with a grocery store, and other amenities) on Prince of Wales Island one reaches when traveling west from Ketchikan.

Tlingit people have inhabited the area for thousands of years. The name "Klawock" is derived from the Tlingit word ławaak, which means "a place with a small lake". This refers to Klawock Lake, beside which the village is located.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Klawock is located on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island, on Klawock Inlet, across from Klawock Island. The city is 56 km (35 mi) from Ketchikan, 755 km (469 mi) south of Juneau, and 1015 km (631 mi) south of Anchorage.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the census of 2000, there were 854 people, 313 households, and 219 families residing in the city. The population density was 50.2 people per square mile (19.4/km²). There were 368 housing units at an average density of 21.6 per square mile (8.3/km²).
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Klawock is primarily based on public services, commercial fishing, and timber harvesting. The city is fully electrified, with power supplied by the Inside Passage Electric Cooperative.
Healthcare[edit | edit source]
Klawock has a public health clinic managed by the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC). The clinic includes emergency services, family medicine, pharmacy, and behavioral health services.
Education[edit | edit source]
The Klawock City School District operates the Klawock City School, which serves students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Klawock has a state-owned, public use airport, Klawock Airport, with airline service provided by several regional airlines.
