Knockdhu distillery
Knockdhu Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Knock, Banffshire, Scotland. The distillery was established in 1894 by John Morrison, who purchased the land after discovering several springs of pure, clear water on the nearby Knock Hill. The distillery is currently owned by Inver House Distillers.
History[edit | edit source]
The Knockdhu Distillery was built in 1894 by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), with production beginning in October of the same year. The distillery was designed by the architect Charles Doig, who was responsible for the design of many other distilleries in Scotland. The distillery was closed during the World War I and World War II due to barley shortages.
In 1988, the distillery was purchased by Inver House Distillers, who resumed production in 1989. In 1993, the distillery changed the name of its single malt from Knockdhu to An Cnoc to avoid confusion with the similarly named Knockando distillery.
Production[edit | edit source]
Knockdhu Distillery uses traditional methods of whisky production. The water used in the production process is sourced from the springs on Knock Hill. The distillery has two copper Pot stills which are used for the distillation process. The whisky is matured in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish oak ex-sherry butts.
The distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies under the An Cnoc brand, including 12, 18, and 24-year-old expressions. The whiskies are known for their light, fruity character with notes of citrus, vanilla, and spice.
