Kong Tai Heong
Chinese-American physician and community leader
Kong Tai Heong (1892–1978) was a pioneering Chinese-American physician and community leader known for her contributions to healthcare and her advocacy for women's rights. She was one of the first Chinese women to practice medicine in the United States and played a significant role in improving healthcare access for Chinese immigrants in Hawaii.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Kong Tai Heong was born in 1892 in Guangdong, China. She was raised in a traditional Chinese family but was encouraged to pursue education, which was uncommon for women at the time. Her family valued education highly, and she was sent to a missionary school where she excelled in her studies.
In 1910, Kong moved to the United States to further her education. She attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed her undergraduate studies. She then went on to study medicine at the University of Southern California, graduating with a medical degree in 1918. Her education was supported by scholarships and the encouragement of her family, who believed in her potential to make a difference in the world.

After completing her medical degree, Kong Tai Heong moved to Hawaii, where she began her medical practice. At the time, Hawaii had a significant population of Chinese immigrants who faced numerous health challenges and barriers to accessing healthcare. Kong was one of the few Chinese-speaking physicians in the area, which allowed her to effectively communicate with and treat her patients.
Kong Tai Heong specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, providing much-needed care to women in the community.
