Kuala Berang

Kuala Berang is a mukim and the district capital of Hulu Terengganu District, Terengganu, Malaysia. It is the gateway to Lake Kenyir. The town is located on the banks of the Terengganu River and it is the main and the oldest town in Hulu Terengganu.

Kuala Berang was once an important center of international trade. The historical Berang River was used as a trading route by traders from China, India and the Middle East. The town was also the site of the ancient kingdom of Gangga Negara, which is believed to have been established in the 2nd century.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Kuala Berang is largely based on agriculture, particularly rubber and oil palm plantations. The town also has a number of small industries, including food processing and handicrafts. Tourism, particularly eco-tourism, is a growing sector, with attractions such as the Kenyir Lake and the Terengganu Inscription Stone drawing visitors.

Kuala Berang is known for its traditional Malay culture, including traditional music, dance, and cuisine. The town is also home to the Terengganu Inscription Stone, the oldest known Malay-language stone inscription, which dates back to 1303.

Kuala Berang has several schools, including primary and secondary schools, as well as a branch of the Universiti Teknologi MARA.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

The town is served by a network of roads and is connected to other parts of Terengganu and Malaysia by the East Coast Expressway. The nearest airport is the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu.
