Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Somasundaram joined the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore as a postdoctoral researcher. His work at NIMHANS focused on the genetic and molecular aspects of brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer.

In 2000, he joined the faculty at the Indian Institute of Science, where he established his own research laboratory. His research group has made several groundbreaking discoveries in the field of cancer biology, particularly in understanding the role of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes in glioblastoma.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Somasundaram's research has significantly advanced the understanding of glioblastoma. His work has focused on identifying novel molecular targets for therapy and understanding the pathways involved in tumor progression and resistance to treatment.

One of his notable contributions is the identification of specific genetic mutations that contribute to the aggressiveness of glioblastoma. His research has also explored the role of the tumor microenvironment in cancer progression, providing insights into potential therapeutic strategies.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Kumaravel Somasundaram has received numerous awards for his contributions to cancer research. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest science awards in India. He has also been recognized by various scientific societies for his work in cancer biology.
