Léopold Nègre (1879–1961) was a prominent French bacteriologist and physician known for his significant contributions to the field of tuberculosis research. He was a key figure in the development of the BCG vaccine, which is used to prevent tuberculosis.

Léopold Nègre was born in 1879 in France. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Paris, where he developed a keen interest in bacteriology and infectious diseases.

Nègre began his career at the Pasteur Institute, where he worked alongside notable scientists such as Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin. His research primarily focused on tuberculosis, a major public health issue at the time.

Development of the BCG Vaccine[edit | edit source]

One of Nègre's most significant contributions was his work on the BCG vaccine (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin). Along with Calmette and Guérin, Nègre played a crucial role in the development and refinement of this vaccine, which has been instrumental in reducing the incidence of tuberculosis worldwide.

In addition to his work on tuberculosis, Nègre conducted research on other infectious diseases and contributed to the understanding of bacterial pathogenesis. He published numerous scientific papers and was a respected figure in the medical community.
