It is located between the orbit and the nasal cavity, and is composed of numerous small compartments or cells known as ethmoid air cells. These cells are divided into three groups: anterior, middle, and posterior.

The anterior group of cells drain into the semilunar hiatus of the nasal cavity, while the middle group drain into the middle meatus. The posterior group of cells drain into the superior meatus.
