Lady Margaret Hall, commonly abbreviated as LMH, is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. Named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of King Henry VII of England, it was founded in 1878 by the Church of England as the first women's college in Oxford. It became coeducational in 1979, admitting both male and female students.
History[edit | edit source]
Lady Margaret Hall was established to provide an education to women at a time when they were excluded from attending the University of Oxford. The college was founded by a group including Edward Stuart Talbot and his wife Lavinia, with the aim of promoting the education and advancement of women in the church and society. The college's first principal was Elizabeth Wordsworth, a niece of the poet William Wordsworth, who was instrumental in shaping the early ethos and values of the college.
Campus[edit | edit source]
The college is located on the banks of the River Cherwell in Norham Gardens, a quiet area north of Oxford city center. The architecture of Lady Margaret Hall blends Victorian Gothic with modern design, reflecting its history and development over the years. Key buildings include the Talbot Hall, the Pipe Partridge Building, and the recently added Clore Graduate Centre.
