Lagenivaginopseudobenedenia
Lagenivaginopseudobenedenia is a genus of monogenean parasites that belong to the family Capsalidae. The genus was first described by Yamaguti in 1965. The species within this genus are ectoparasites that affect marine fish, specifically those belonging to the family Serranidae, commonly known as sea basses and groupers.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The genus Lagenivaginopseudobenedenia is part of the phylum Platyhelminthes, class Monogenea, order Monopisthocotylea, and family Capsalidae. The genus was first described by Yamaguti in 1965. The name of the genus is derived from the Latin words lagen (flask), vagina (sheath), pseudo (false), and Benedenia, another genus of monogenean parasites.
Morphology[edit | edit source]
Species of Lagenivaginopseudobenedenia are characterized by their haptor, which is the organ used for attachment to the host. The haptor is typically armed with two types of hooks: marginal hooks and transverse bars. The marginal hooks are arranged in a single row around the edge of the haptor, while the transverse bars are located in the center. The number and arrangement of these hooks can be used to distinguish between different species.
Life Cycle[edit | edit source]
Like other monogeneans, species of Lagenivaginopseudobenedenia have a direct life cycle, meaning they do not require an intermediate host. The parasites attach to the gills, skin, or fins of their host using their haptor. Once attached, they feed on the host's blood and tissues, and reproduce by laying eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae, which then seek out a new host.
Hosts and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Species of Lagenivaginopseudobenedenia are known to infect several species of marine fish, particularly those belonging to the family Serranidae. This includes species such as the giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) and the humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis). The parasites have been reported in various parts of the world, including the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
