History[edit | edit source]
Lai Chi Kok Hospital was originally built as a quarantine station in 1921 to control the spread of infectious diseases. During the 1930s, it was repurposed as a tuberculosis sanatorium, providing care for patients suffering from the disease. In the 1950s, the hospital was converted into a psychiatric hospital to address the growing need for mental health services in Hong Kong.
Facilities[edit | edit source]
The hospital complex included several buildings, each serving different purposes. These included wards for patients, administrative offices, and staff quarters. The hospital also had facilities for occupational therapy and rehabilitation.
Closure[edit | edit source]
Lai Chi Kok Hospital was closed in 2000 as part of a reorganization of Hong Kong's healthcare services. The site has since been repurposed for other uses, including as a correctional facility.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The hospital played a significant role in the history of healthcare in Hong Kong, particularly in the treatment of tuberculosis and mental health. Its closure marked the end of an era in the city's medical history.
