Origins and History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Lai Haraoba can be traced back to the pre-Vaishnavism era in Manipur. The festival is believed to have been celebrated since the first century AD, making it one of the oldest traditions of the Meitei people. Festival Details[edit | edit source]

Lai Haraoba is celebrated in the months of Kalika (April/May) and Engen (May/June). The festival lasts for 10 to 15 days, during which the participants perform various rituals and dances. The main event of the festival is the Lai Haraoba dance, which is performed by the Maibi (priestesses) and the Maiba (priests). The dance is a reenactment of the creation story, and is performed in front of the local deity's shrine.

The festival also includes other events such as the Khamba Thoibi dance, which is a duet dance performed by a male and female dancer. The dance is a depiction of the love story between Prince Khamba and Princess Thoibi of Moirang, and is one of the highlights of the festival.
