Larry Sanger

Lawrence Mark Sanger (born July 16, 1968) is an American internet project developer, co-founder of Wikipedia, and the founder of Citizendium. Sanger has been involved in various online knowledge projects and has been a vocal advocate for the development of reliable and high-quality online information resources.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Sanger was born in Bellevue, Washington, and grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. He attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1991. He then pursued graduate studies in philosophy at Ohio State University, earning a Master of Arts in 1995 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2000.

Wikipedia[edit | edit source]

In March 2000, Sanger was hired by Jimmy Wales to work on Nupedia, a free online encyclopedia. Sanger served as the editor-in-chief of Nupedia, which aimed to create high-quality, peer-reviewed articles. However, the slow pace of article production led Sanger and Wales to explore alternative methods.

In January 2001, Sanger and Wales launched Wikipedia, a collaborative online encyclopedia that allowed anyone to edit articles. Sanger is credited with coining the name "Wikipedia" and establishing many of its early policies and guidelines. He served as Wikipedia's chief organizer until his resignation in March 2002.

Citizendium[edit | edit source]

After leaving Wikipedia, Sanger became critical of the project's reliability and the quality of its content. In response, he founded Citizendium in 2006, a wiki-based encyclopedia that aimed to improve on Wikipedia by requiring contributors to use their real names and by involving expert editors to oversee content.

Other Projects and Activities[edit | edit source]

Sanger has been involved in various other online knowledge projects, including the development of the Digital Universe and the WatchKnowLearn educational video library. He has also been an advocate for decentralized social networks and has written extensively on the philosophy of knowledge and the ethics of online information.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Sanger is married and has two children. He continues to be active in the field of online knowledge and information ethics.
