Leather subculture

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Leather subculture refers to the practices and styles of dress that have become associated with the BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism, and Masochism) community. Originating from the post-World War II biker culture, the leather subculture has since evolved to encompass a wide range of sexual identities and preferences.

History[edit | edit source]

The leather subculture has its roots in the post-World War II biker culture, which was itself influenced by military aesthetics. The first leather bar, the Gold Coast, opened in Chicago in 1958. The 1960s and 1970s saw the emergence of organizations like the Leather Clubs and publications such as Drummer Magazine, which helped to further define and establish the leather community.

Leather Fashion[edit | edit source]

Leather fashion is a significant aspect of the leather subculture. It typically involves clothing made of materials such as leather, latex, or vinyl, often in black or other dark colors. Common items include leather jackets, leather pants, leather boots, and accessories such as leather gloves and leather caps. These items are often worn in combination with other fetish wear, such as harnesses or chaps.

Leather Pride[edit | edit source]

The Leather Pride Flag is a symbol used by the leather subculture to signify leather pride and BDSM pride. The flag was designed by Tony DeBlase and first displayed at the International Mr. Leather event in Chicago in 1989. The flag's design and colors have specific meanings related to the leather community.

Leather Events[edit | edit source]

There are numerous events worldwide that cater to the leather subculture, including Folsom Street Fair, International Mr. Leather, and Fetish Week London. These events often include competitions, workshops, social gatherings, and opportunities to buy and sell leather goods.
