Leicester

Leicester is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and close to the eastern end of the National Forest. It is to the north-east of Birmingham and Coventry, south of Nottingham, and west of Peterborough.

History

The city has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. The Romans knew it as Ratae Corieltauvorum, which grew from an Iron Age settlement. Leicester's city centre was the site of the Roman town.

Geography

Leicester is located at the intersection of two major railway lines—the north/south Midland Main Line and the east/west Birmingham to London Stansted CrossCountry line; as well as the confluence of the M1/M69 motorways and the A6/A46 trunk routes. Leicester is the home to football club Leicester City and rugby club Leicester Tigers.

Economy

Leicester has a diverse economy with sectors in food processing, hosiery, footwear, and engineering. It is also a major location for supermarket chains such as Tesco and Asda.

Education

Leicester is home to two universities, the University of Leicester and De Montfort University.

Culture

Leicester is known for its diverse culture and is one of the oldest cities in England with a history going back at least two millennia.
