Leo Ferris
Leo Ferris (May 31, 1917 – June 1, 1993) was an American basketball executive and one of the key figures in the early development of professional basketball in the United States. He is best known for his role in the formation of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and for helping to create the 24-second shot clock.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Leo Ferris was born in Elmira, New York. He attended Syracuse University, where he developed a passion for basketball. After graduating, Ferris began his career in the sport by working with various minor league basketball teams.
Basketball Career[edit | edit source]
National Basketball League[edit | edit source]
Ferris started his professional basketball career with the National Basketball League (NBL). He was instrumental in the operations of the Buffalo Bisons, a team that later became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks.
Formation of the NBA[edit | edit source]
In 1946, Ferris played a crucial role in the merger of the NBL and the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which led to the creation of the NBA in 1949. This merger helped to stabilize professional basketball and laid the foundation for the modern NBA.
24-Second Shot Clock[edit | edit source]
One of Ferris's most significant contributions to basketball was the development of the 24-second shot clock. Introduced in the 1954-55 NBA season, the shot clock revolutionized the game by increasing the pace and reducing stalling tactics. This innovation is widely credited with saving the NBA from declining interest and attendance.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After his contributions to the NBA, Ferris continued to work in various capacities within the sport. He remained a respected figure in basketball circles until his death in 1993. Ferris's legacy lives on through the continued use of the shot clock and his role in the formation of the NBA.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Ferris was married and had children. He spent his later years in Buffalo, New York, where he remained active in the local basketball community.
