Leonid Toptunov

Leonid Fyodorovich Toptunov (Russian: Леонид Фёдорович Топтунов) was a Soviet engineer who played a significant role in the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Born on August 16, 1960, Toptunov was a senior reactor control engineer at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR.

Toptunov was on duty during the fateful night of April 25-26, 1986, when a safety test at Reactor 4 went catastrophically wrong, resulting in a massive explosion and the release of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. Toptunov was responsible for overseeing the test and implementing the necessary procedures.

As the reactor power levels began to fluctuate uncontrollably, Toptunov and his colleagues made critical errors in managing the reactor's safety systems. These errors ultimately led to a sudden power surge and the subsequent explosion that destroyed the reactor building.

Toptunov suffered severe radiation exposure during the accident and succumbed to acute radiation sickness on May 14, 1986, just a few weeks after the disaster. His actions and decisions, along with those of his colleagues, have been the subject of intense scrutiny and analysis in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster.

The legacy of Leonid Toptunov serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols and procedures in the operation of nuclear facilities.
