Leucanthemum
Leucanthemum is a genus of flowering plants in the Asteraceae family, which is commonly known as the daisy family. This genus is native to Europe and the temperate regions of Asia, and it has been widely introduced elsewhere, including North America. Leucanthemum species are perennial plants, known for their simple yet striking flowers, which typically have white petals surrounding a yellow disc. The most well-known species within this genus is Leucanthemum vulgare, commonly referred to as the oxeye daisy or common daisy.
Description[edit | edit source]
Leucanthemum plants vary in size but are generally characterized by their lance-shaped leaves and large, solitary flower heads that appear in the summer. The flowers are composed of a central yellow disc, made up of many small florets, surrounded by white ray florets, which are often mistaken for petals. These plants can thrive in a range of soil types, though they prefer well-drained soils and sunny locations.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The taxonomy of Leucanthemum has been subject to revision, with some species formerly classified under this genus now placed in other genera. The genus belongs to the large Asteraceae family, which includes many other well-known flowers such as sunflowers, chrysanthemums, and asters.
Cultivation and Uses[edit | edit source]
Leucanthemum species are popular in gardens and landscaping for their aesthetic appeal and ease of care. They are often used in borders, wildflower meadows, and as cut flowers. These plants are also valued for their ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. In addition to their ornamental use, some species have been used in traditional medicine.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
While many species of Leucanthemum are common and not considered at risk, habitat destruction and over-collection have led to declines in some areas. Conservation efforts focus on protecting natural habitats and promoting sustainable collection practices.
Species[edit | edit source]
Some notable species within the Leucanthemum genus include:
- Leucanthemum vulgare – Oxeye Daisy, Common Daisy
- Leucanthemum maximum – Shasta Daisy
- Leucanthemum adustum
- Leucanthemum ircutianum
